A whole week off from University, comes with a whole lot of other problems. It’s so easy to see it as a break and fall into the temptation of doing nothing but get up late and watch netflix. That’s not to say that you can’t do that, but it’s such a great opportunity to catch up on everything else – mainly the reason that some Universities do offer it.
It is important not to overwork yourself however and take regular breaks so you don’t crash and burn. Funny of me to preach on that, when it’s something that I’m still learning how to do.
Have a good sleeping pattern
Now is the perfect chance to sort out your sleeping, burning the candle at both ends isn’t going to work out well in the end. With no commitments to turn up to a 9am, turn off your alarms and let your body clock do the work. That’s what I’ve been doing recently and I had the best sleep of my life last night, and feel so refreshed right now.
Mental Health problems within students is always rising, and people should be more aware of the stresses that they can be under so that we can combat the issue head on. Taking breaks and allowing for self care means that you won’t burn out and you’ll be able to focus more on assignments and in lectures. Taking this time while you have a week off to re-focus, evaluate how happy you are and de-stress is incredibly important.
Catch up on reading
There always seems to be so much reading at University, and every time you think you’ve caught up – there’s another recommended read on your list. Having free time that you can actually schedule to do reading makes it so less stressful and it gives you that perfect time to get organised.
Get started on assignments
On the theme of getting organised, it’s a good time to see where you stand with your assignments and if there’s anything that you can do to get it off the road. With no other distractions around and no pressure, it feels easier to do it in your own time … and possibly in your own bed.
Keep your work ethic
The lure of working in reading week is that it’s easy to quit when you’re working from home. When you have the option of watching netflix, going out or working – it’s easier to fall for the desire to leave the work. If you can maintain the self-control to sit down and work for a little bit, then it won’t feel like such a shock when University starts back up again.
I realise that some of those points were quite contradictory, telling you to work but also rest, sleep but also don’t loose your work ethic. It’s up to what you and your body needs – if you’re overly stressed and need sleep, then sleep. It’s your time to rest but also get re-focused and prepared for starting the second half of the semester.
