Last Wednesday I went on a public relations university trip to London, we went to visit Splendid Communications and then visited the museum of brands. Ultimately I learnt a lot from the day, and it opened my eyes about the possibility of working in an agency.
This was the first time I had visited an agency in London, and it was a great way to get a sense of the agency lifestyle – especially when we had a tour around the office, and got to see how collaborative the work spaces were laid out.
They gave us a really great presentation where we learnt about the history and approach of Splendid in the world of PR work. It was really insightful to hear the top tips from PR professionals in how they approach new briefs and how we can work to get ourselves into the industry. They went through how to make a good campaign, how to make a good impression in interviews and through detailed examples of past campaigns they’ve run.
The Q&A section at the end was also helpful because I got to hear thoughts from my friends and co-students, and they asked some interesting questions that I hadn’t thought of before.
I came away from the session feeling inspired by the enthusiasm shown to us, and I’d learnt intricate details about how an agency works to fulfill a brief – as well as feeling more positive about my degree and overall career direction.
Although that was the main focus of the day, the Museum of Brands that we visited later, was really interesting. The museum is set up around a time tunnel which you walk through and get to see the evolution of brands through time. We all really enjoyed seeing well known brands that we love, when they originated and how they are different from what we know now.
All in all, it was a really insightful day and I came away feeling refreshed and more focused on finishing my degree.
